Multi-Media Mashups: Legalities
Recently a political video posted on YouTube caught the attention of more than just the large online video watching public, but the wider public at large. It is called the first political viral video for the 2008 USA Presidental election.
The video is a what is being called a mash-up. Read this Washingdon Post article from 8/2/06 here.
It is the first thing I read that defined what a mashup is and mentioned copyright law. Basically you are taking film clips and mixing them together with new video and sound. Well what about the orginal owner of the video or music and their rights? Those that are making them say it is for satire and it is free speech and they are not trying to make money off of it.
