This appears to be mainly “interference”, what happens when frequencies/waves encounter one another, similar to the way two stones tossed in a pond in close enough proximity will create patterns. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interference Nothing particularly magical about it, but it is the basis for holography and possibly other types of information storage and transmission yet undiscovered. Our own eyes actually see based on waves, not lines, but that’s drifting from the topic. Try this with any decent metal bowl, you’ll find you can achieve something identical, whether or not the bowl is from Tibet or Taiwan.

I wonder what would happen if you put in two different water colors in there at opposite ends of the bowl and struck it then?
