Email from Rep. Betsey Markey on whether she supports HR 1207: Vague and does not say she will cosponsor nor vote for the Audit the Fed Bill
———————————————
UPDATE: Colorado Representative Betsey Markey representing the 4th Congressional District becomes the 244th cosponsor of Ron Paul’s HR 1207 Audit the Fed bill as of June 25th, 2009.
———————————————
I and many others in Colorado have contacted our Representative for the 4th Congressional District, Betsey Markey (D) asking her to be a cosponsor for Ron Paul’s Audit the Fed Bill H.R. 1207. The bill at the time of this post has 179 cosponsors. At this time Betsey Markey is not one of them and in her email sent out today she didn’t indicate that she plans to.
This bill is important because right now, due to a US Code it is not possible for our representatives in Congress, nor any other agency to fully audit the Federal Reserve. The “Audit the Fed Bill” H.R. 1207 would strike portions of US code, 31 USC 714, and order an audit of the Federal Reserve. We need transparency NOW. The private Federal Reserve is creating Trillions of dollars NOW and we need to know what this internally secretive organization is up to and what is on their books, as they are playing with all of our futures and value of the dollar.
In the email Betsey Markey sent today (full text below), she doesn’t say she will cosponsor the bill, nor vote for it, but that she “… will keep your views in mind should H.R. 1207 ever come before the full House for a vote.” Hmmm… sounds like a political no to me. We need to make that a political yes by contacting her. She also assumes something I never stated with this line “I share your frustration over the failure of our financial regulatory system to provide adequate oversight of the financial services sector necessary to prevent the current economic crisis.” My frustration isn’t with the oversight but of the Federal Reserve system in general. Also in the email she states: “As I was during my campaign, I continue to be committed to strong oversight of government agencies, including the Federal Reserve.” Um, the Federal Reserve is not a government agency, it is a private central bank.
Of course the email below was not specific to me and was a blanket email being sent out to those who had contacted her about this issue. I know this because I know somebody who got the same exact response.
This is a bipartisan issue. With both the CampaignForLiberty and the progressive FireDogLake blog supporting this among many organizations. Educate yourself about the issue by visiting the two links earlier in this paragraph as well as your own research.

Here is the email response she sent out today:
Thank you for contacting me about the Federal Reserve. I appreciate your concern about the vital issues facing our nation. As your representative, I both need and value your input to help me best serve the 4th District of Colorado.
Many of my constituents have written to me concerned about the Federal Reserve. As you may know, early this year Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) introduced H.R. 1207, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act. This bill would change the processes by which the Federal Reserve is audited, and would open operations to enhanced scrutiny. It was introduced on February 26, 2009 and was referred to the House Committee on Financial Services. Although I do not sit on that committee, I will keep your views in mind should H.R. 1207 ever come before the full House for a vote.
I share your frustration over the failure of our financial regulatory system to provide adequate oversight of the financial services sector necessary to prevent the current economic crisis. My colleagues who serve on the Financial Services Committee are exploring and addressing the areas in our financial regulatory structure that need reform to provide proper oversight of our constantly evolving financial sector. It is vital that reform be implemented properly and thoughtfully to allow for financial markets to innovate and operate successfully.
As I was during my campaign, I continue to be committed to strong oversight of government agencies, including the Federal Reserve. I also strongly believe in ensuring our tax dollars are well spent and restoring fiscal responsibility. The American people work hard to balance their own checkbooks, and Washington must do the same. We cannot continue to pass mountains of debt to future generations and I will continue working with my colleagues in Congress to find bipartisan solutions to make government more accountable to the people.
I appreciate that you took the time to contact me and I hope you will continue to be in touch about the issues that are important to you. Please feel free to visit my website (http://betsymarkey.house.gov) where you can share your ideas with me, learn about the services I can provide to you, and sign up for my periodic email updates on what I am doing to help Colorado’s 4th District.
Sincerely,
Betsy Markey
Member of Congress
