Congressman Ron Paul gives the latest exciting news on his legislation to audit the Federal Reserve and explains the possible next steps for the bill.

Here is my paraphrasing of what I saw when watching the above video:

Ron Paul talks about the 223 number an important milestone but that he is wanting to have 290 cosponsors so that the bill could be passed even under suspension. Also that the Senate Audit the Fed bill 604 and how that bill needs support. To me this means it is time for the grassroots to start pushing our Senators more on this bill and educating more people why this bill is needed.

Ron Paul goes on to talk about Dennis Kucinich being the 218 (the over 50%) cosponsor and how Ron Paul is a cosponsor of Kucinich’s bill that is HR 2424 that also deals with Federal Reserve and he explains a bit about this. Ron Paul says that the two bills are not competing and do not cancel each other out. He does say the HR1207 is much broader and has no sunset and calls for a full audit. He said that if HR 2424 goes to the banking committee he may have the chance to attach HR 1207 to it. He is positive about the future of this bill, but said there is no automatics on this, that if this gets closer to getting passed that the money powers will lean real hard on the leaders of both parties in order to stop this. Ron Paul isn’t losing sleep over this though – saying that we have already had a major victory- a moral and political victory and may have a legislative victory too. That if this bill is shut down it will only prove all the shenanigans going on with the Federal Reserve. Ron Paul then talks about what could happen in the banking committee and that there probably will be efforts to water down the bill. He talks about how something like this happened in a 1978 Audit bill that was watered down with exception clauses, such that it was worthless. He goes on to say that if this effort is successful we then can start talking about getting back to the Constitution and getting rid of the central bank.

Having the votes for passage, however, doesn’t guarantee passage. Democratic leadership controls the floor schedule. To get around the leaders, backers of the bill would need to file a “discharge petition” with 218 signatures. Backers could also introduce a rule related to the bill, then file a discharge petition to force a vote on the rule. After a mandatory waiting period (30 days on the bill; 7 for the rule), the motion would be discharged from committee and referred to the floor, where it would get a vote on the second or fourth Monday.

But getting those 218 signatures on the petition isn’t as easy as getting cosponsors. Cosponsoring a bill is merely to express support; signing a discharge petition can be seen as an act of defiance against leadership.

So everybody that wants to see this bill passed, now is not the time to sit on our laurels, now is the time is to spread the message more and keep changing minds.
